Week 4

After wrestling with the story of "transformation" I used for my narrative, and taking Enno's advice to sharpen the concept to help advance the project I have morphed it into...Metamorphosis. Simply by repositioning the narrative, I believe that I have opened up a much more creative avenue to explore the design.

Metamorphosis sounds like a great conceptual statement. I instantly thought about nature when I read your statement, particulary trees and insects. You have probably thought about this already or mayby I am way off but, when something goes through the process of Metamorphosis it begins as one thing and ends completly different. Architecturaly, mayby your building form takes on some of those characteristics. Perhaps as you aproach the building the structure looks like one thing, and as you enter and move through the space things begin to change and in the end it turns out to be a completly different experience. I am sure you can also play with the night and day aspect of things with Metamorphosis as well, relating it specifically to the site and your interpretation of what you took from the site(of course). Very graphic boards I like them. I am a fly fisherman and love the study of insects so I naturally liked them. Anyway I hope I have hepled.

Eric,

Both boards are beautiful and the concept statement is even convincing!

Be more specific about your experience of the site! You nicely show its character as it is, but it is unclear how you react to it and how the board helps set up your theme. Think about identifying some shortcomings that will be addressed by your intervention.

Concept: breaking out two sub topics is a clever move. Cocooning is an promising proposition: did you have a more literal reading or a more poetic approach in mind when it comes to translating it into built form? Curtis suggestions are worth spending some time with.

I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out!

Eric –

I really like your idea of this small paradise hidden by the concrete jungle of downtown. It is a great concept to work with.

Similar to Curtis’ comment about the experience changing through the space. Maybe your entrance is exactly that. Basically that is morphs from a hard rigid structure into this paradise that people would not know is there until they experience it.

Keep going…

Eric-

I wish I would have looked at your board sooner so I could steel, oh I mean borrow;), some of your ideas! Your boards are definitely eye catching and design competition material. There is no way that a jury member would walk by them without stopping for a look.

Way to set the bar high!

Hi Eric,

I really like your new theme, Metamorphosis! And also how you have set up your boards. Like what Kate says, a real eye catcher. One thing though, how did your site analysis pulled you into this theme? What made you think of this when you were analyzing the site; I guess sort of tie it all together. Also, I agree with what Curtis and Chad said about it "begins as one thing and ends completely different" and it ending with a paradise. This will be interesting.
